Tomorrow, Saturday 11th Feb, is the traditional Lantern Festival which is celebrated by families to mark the grand finale of the Lunar New Year season. My family has celebrated this for decades… and as its name suggests there are firecrackers, fireworks, hand lanterns and torches in abundance to brighten up the festivities as people welcome the New Year in a spirit of peace, prosperity and joy. I am going to try and find some time to make some of my favourite Tang yuan with sweet red bean soup. This is a classic Chinese dish eaten on my many festivals and traditional occasions - perfect for the Lantern Festival! Best served hot, but it also refreshing cold, when the dumplings tend to to be firmer. The glutinous rice signifies reunion and families 'sticking together’ and makes the dumplings delightfully sticky, light and tender. You can find the full recipe in Chinese Food Made Easy.
