Hi everyone! Good luck to all the children who go back to school this week. This time of year always reminds me of butterflies in the tummy as I made my way back to school for the start of the new year. I think it’s fantastic that all children get a free school meal up to the age of 7 now. Not only does is encourage children to try new things, it also introduces them to a healthy, balanced and tasty meal rather than indulging in over processed snacks and treats. Of course, having a hearty and energising breakfast is one way to help set kids up for a great day. It gets their metabolism moving and will help them energise, stay alert and avoid any sugar slumps during the day. To be fair, I know most children would rather stick to their favourite cereals but even introducing a different option just once or twice a week could make a real difference. I have lots of breakfast ideas in my book, Eat Clean: Wok Yourself to Health but for a quick solution, you could try offering scrambled egg on avocado or a delicious smoothie packed full of vitamin and minerals, instead. A great alternative to cereal could be my Winter flavour-burst fruits with home-made honey cinnamon granola and almond milk. This is a great crunchy breakfast which delivers a combination of sustained energy and plenty of nutrients. With plums, pears and apples coming into season, their low glycemic index rating and slow energy release will leave them feeling full until lunch time. Here is the full recipe for you all to enjoy (recipe here). Wishing you all a very happy and successful academic year ahead! Love, Ching x
