With New York City on my agenda in the next few days, it turned my mind to classic cocktails, many of which were created by this city’s great bartenders. The Manhattan, Gin Fizz, White Russian and the Old Fashioned are all great contenders in the classic American cocktail stakes, but for its yin and yang, sweet and sour flavour, the Side Car - popularised by Harry McElhone of Harry's Bar Paris - has to be my all time favourite due to the sweetness of the cognac and Cointreau against the citrusy lemon. Here's how to make it yourself: Side Car Ingredients: 1.5 oz (50ml) cognac 1 oz (30ml) Cointreau ½ oz (15ml) lemon juice Orange peel, just for garnish Method: Pour all the liquid ingredients into a cocktail shaker filled with ice and shake hard until the liquid has turned cold. Strain over ice into an old fashioned glass. Flame the orange peel over the surface of the drink, then drop it in. Enjoy!
